Granada, a province steeped in history and cultural richness, derives its name from the majestic pomegranate, a symbol of its Arab heritage and cultural fusion. Like the pomegranate, Granada is densely packed with historical and cultural gems waiting to be discovered.
Granada is located in the heart of Andalucía, southern Spain. Its strategic position provides a backdrop of dramatic mountains and coastal beauty, shaping its unique identity.
There are several theories about the origin of the word Granada. According to some, the Romans named it from the Latin ‘granatum’, meaning pomegranate tree, in reference to the tree that produces pomegranates. It is believed that this choice may be related to the abundance of these trees in the region, which have their roots in the desert. Other sources suggest that the name comes from the Arabic ‘Gar-anat’, which translates as ‘hill of pilgrims‘. Before the 9th century, the most prominent town in the area was Medina-Elvira, located in what is now Atarfe. However, the Zirids moved the capital from Medina-Elvira to Medina Garnata, which eventually evolved phonetically into Granada.
