Other sources suggest that the name comes from the Arabic ‘Gar-anat’, which translates as ‘hill of pilgrims‘. Before the 9th century, the most prominent town in the area was Medina-Elvira, located in what is now Atarfe. However, the Zirids moved the capital from Medina-Elvira to Medina Garnata, which eventually evolved phonetically into Granada.
